Alfred E. Matthews, 80, Cloverdale, died April 1, 2009, in Clarian West Hospital. Mr. Matthews was born February 8, 1929, in Jennings County, Indiana, the son of the late Elvin “Jack” Matthews and Nellie (Perry) Brewer.
Mr. Matthews retired from the Fort Benjamin Harrison Finance Center, where he served as a mail clerk. Prior to, he worked in the J.C. Penney Auto Center at Lafayette and Washington Square Malls and also as the production manager at Hamilton-Cosco. In addition, he and his late wife, Goldie, owned and operated the Matthew’s Canine Country Club. He was a 49-year member of the Medora Masonic Lodge, member of the Murat Shrine, and the Cloverdale American Legion.
He married Goldie (Waskom) Matthews on August 26, 1949; she preceded him in death on November 24, 2008. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Carl Matthews and a sister, Emogene Morin.
Survivors include his children, John M. Matthews (Diane) of Knob Noster, Missouri, Jeff E. Matthews of Plainfield, and Margaret “Peggy” LaPlante (Patrick) of Mooresville; brother, Jack Matthews of Chicago, Illinois; sister, Eileen Grizzard of Scipio; 11 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren.
Services will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2009, 10 a.m., in the Carlisle & Son Funeral Chapel, Mooresville, with visitation there from 4 to 8 p.m., Friday, April 3, 2009. Bill Gott, Jr. will officiate the service. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Hall, Indiana. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association. |
